GREENFIELD — For some children, the average day includes lugging a heavy water jug. For others, it includes limited access to food or medical care.

Park Chapel Christian Church is bringing simulations of such experiences together for “A Day in the Life of a Child.”

“They’ll learn what it’s like to have to eat the same food every day, (or) at a moment’s notice pack up everything you might need,” said organizer Susanna Combs.

The church will offer a tour featuring five vignettes designed to highlight issues children face around the world: hunger in Haiti, finding medical care in Thailand, fetching water in India, education in Kenya, and living as a refugee in the Middle East.

“They’ll learn that nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than $5.50 a day,” Combs said. “We’re just kind of giving people some food for thought.”

The tour, open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21, is part of Global Impact Weekend at the church, 1176 E. McKenzie Road. The annual event highlights ministry partners globally; this year’s focus is the Hope Foundation in Kenya, which works with children in schools and feeding centers.

Visiting the “Day in the Life …” stations takes about an hour, and a new tour group begins the journey every 15 minutes. You can book a tour time at https://parkchapel.org/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-child-2.

After the tour, groups visit the End of the Road Emporium for tea and bread from Kenya and more information on ministries helping children in various countries.

“The whole idea is just to expose our congregation and our families and our community to things around the world that are different … a better understanding of the lives that other people in other parts of the world live,” Combs said. “We need to have compassion for others.”
