GREENFIELD — Greenfield’s chapter of Walk with a Doc plans its annual “Pack the Park” event Sept. 17 and is aiming to bring as many people as possible together for a walk in Riley Park.

Walk with a Doc’s local organization is sponsored by Hancock Wellness Center and American Health Network. On the first and third Tuesday of each month, local physicians lead walks through Riley Park (or Hancock Wellness Center in the winter months), as well as discussing exercise and nutrition and providing blood pressure testing.

The Pack the Park event aims to promote the regular walks, and walking for exercise in general, by attracting as many walkers as possible. The event will feature raffle giveaways, live music and success stories about the health benefits of physical activity. Water and snacks will be provided.

Dietitian Dr. Cheryl Shaw is one of the doctors who routinely participate in walks. She said the gatherings are a great way for people to start forming a habit of being physically active. Many of the participants, she said, have health conditions that limit their mobility but are still working to improve.

“It definitely is very rewarding to see someone come back and do another lap that they weren’t able to do the week before,” Shaw said.
