Beech Church near Carthage remains more than 180 years after African American settlers built it. Indiana Landmarks | Submitted

Historic church has been renovated

CARTHAGE — Beech Church near Carthage, once named to Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list of the state’s vulnerable landmarks, has been renovated to preserve it.

A celebration is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 24) at The Beech Settlement, 10258 N. Rush County Road 725S, Carthage.

Built in the 1860s, the church and a nearby cemetery are what remains of the Beech Settlement, Indiana’s first community of free black settlers. They arrived in the 1820s and settled where they did in part because of the Quaker presence in the area. Walnut Ridge Friends Church was nearby, and Quakers were known to be willing to sell land to black people and be neighbors with them.

Descendants of the Beech settlers are among those who gather each year for a homecoming service at the church. This year’s service is set for 3 p.m. Sunday.

Duo to play concert in Knightstown

KNIGHTSTOWN — The Bethel Arts Series of Bethel Presbyterian Church will present Brian and Molly Wallen in concert at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The church is located at 112 S. Franklin St., Knightstown.

The Wallens have taken their close-knit harmony vocals across the United States and abroad at events such as the Telluride Blues Fest.

Originally from Kentucky, Molly Wallen is a classically trained vocalist and percussionist with experience in opera and bluegrass alike. Hoosier guitarist/vocalist Brian Keith Wallen won second in the 2015 International Blues Challenge and was also named “Artist of the Year” by the Starr-Gennett Foundation.

“Incorporating elements of blues, bluegrass, country, and folk, their combined influences range from acoustic favorites such as Chris Stapleton and John Prine to the guitar-driven blues of John Mayer and Bonnie Raitt,” according to the duo’s website (thewallensmusic.com).

A freewill offering will be received for the performers.
