Girls soccer

Cougars start off strong

Greenfield-Central opened its 2019 season with a win, topping visiting Warren Central, 7-2 on Monday.

Kelsi McLaughlin had a hat trick to lead the Cougars. Anne Marie DeKeyser scored twice, and Macy Huber and Sarah Contrarez scored her first high school goal.

The Cougars (1-0) are next in action Thursday at University.

Marauders fall in opener

Mt. Vernon opened the season with a hard-fought defeat, falling 1-0 on the road to Chatard.

The Marauders out-shot the hosts, 17-12, but were unable to find the back of the net. Chatard scored the game winner with less than 15 minutes to go in the match.

Mt. Vernon hosts Tipton on Thursday.

Volleyball

Dragons sweep Spartans

New Palestine posted a dominant 25-7, 25-7, 25-11 victory over host Connersville on Monday at the Spartan Bowl.

Jesi Hall led the Dragons at the net with 10 kills, three blocks and three aces. Grace Myers had 14 digs and three aces. Sarah Adam had 27 assists and two aces. Kaelyn Armstrong added seven kills and four aces. Rachel Popp added eight kills.

The Dragons are next in action Thursday at Guerin Catholic.

Cougars get second win

Greenfield-Central picked up another win on Monday, topping Scecina in three sets, 25-13, 25-22, 22-15.

Accurate passing from Marissa Grigsby (17 digs) and Makayla Price (17 digs) allowed setters Morgan Hornaday and Ali Knecht to run an efficient offense. Brooke Herrell lead the way in kills with 11 but junior Ava Antic was close behind with 10 kills and 13 digs for the night. Juniors Kenley Carpenter, Molly Schwarzkopf, and Olivia Ellis were able to put up strong blocks against Scecina’s hitters.

The Cougars are back at home tonight against Westfield.

Royals fall in five

Eastern Hancock opened its season with a five-set marathon match, falling to host North Decatur, 3-2.

Cougars 4th, Royals 6th

Greenfield-Central’s girls placed fourth in the large school division at the Triton Central Early Bird Invitational on Monday, while Eastern Hancock’s boys finished sixth.

The Cougars were led by the second-place finish of Audrey Brinkruff. Reagan Crouch placed 16th in her first high school meet. Also competing for the Cougars were Olivia Wahl (31st), Emily Wright (38th), Olivia Moss (45th), Emma Leininger (48th), Gia Valenzano (50th), and Sophia Moss (56th).

The Royals were led by Danny Salafranca, who finished 48th. Following him were Skyler Sexton (82nd), Luke McCartney (86th), Aaron Surburg (103rd), Caleb Matthys (110th) and Brandon Cross (117th).

Marauders open with win

Mt. Vernon took to the road for their season opener, topping host Shenandoah, 3-2.

Picking up wins for the Marauders were Jackson Dunlavy and Dallas Turner at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-0; Justin Lemke and Reece Powell at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2; and Chris Hays at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2.

Royals get sweep

Eastern Hancock got a five-match sweep in its season opener on Monday, topping Randolph Southern, 5-0.

Kodey Huff won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Nolan Stout won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Zeke Dixon won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Brady Smith and John McDaniel won 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5, and at No. 2 doubles, Sammy Blocher and Bryce Wennen won 6-0, 6-4.

Dragons fall in opener

New Palestine dropped a 3-2 match in Monday’s season opener at home against Greensburg.

Ben Blachly posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory for the Dragons at No. 1 singles. Ethan Haeberle and Jackson Havel won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Girls golf

Dragons top Whiteland

New Palestine posted a solid victory Monday at Whiteland, beating the Warriors 182-209 at The Legends in Franklin.

Annaliese Fox was match medalist, shooting a one-under par 35. Izzy Gray added a 43, Megan Diller 47 and Abby Belgin 57.

The Dragons are now 2-1. They will host Southport on Thursday at The Links.

Cougars win again

Greenfield-Central notched another victory Monday night, topping Beech Grove, 183-23.

Caroline Gibson again led the team and was match medalist with a 40. Haley Hoagland and Tandess O’Neal also had strong nights posting a 43 and 45 respectively. Freshman Sydnie Wherry joined the scoring for the first time with a 55.

The Cougars host New Castle today.
