Aug. 20

In 1958, Mt. Comfort Methodist Church consecrated a new sanctuary. The church is now known as Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church.

Aug. 21

In 1977, Greenfield Country Club dedicated nine new holes to become an 18-hole golf course. The course is now known as Hawk’s Tail.

Aug. 22

In 1986, the Daily Reporter bought 3½ acres at the northwest corner of State Street (State Road 9) and New Road to build a newspaper plant.

In 1871, several families met to discuss starting Fortville Christian Church.

Aug. 24

In 1942, paving began on “the new superhighway,” — as the July 8, 1942, edition of the Daily Reporter called it — that was being built between Greenfield and Cleveland. Workers laid 200 feet of concrete on this day, west toward Greenfield from the John A. Hatfield campground. Fifteen houses and two churches along the north side of the Greenfield-Cleveland route were moved back to make room for a wider U.S. 40. In Charlottesville, two homes south of the road were moved back, and another was razed.

Aug. 25

In 1871, an evangelistic meeting at the Levi Thomas Grove began and lasted for two weeks. At the end of two weeks, Fortville Christian Church was launched with a membership of 45 believers.

In 1963, Faith Lutheran Church dedicated a new worship space at 200 W. McKenzie Road in Greenfield. For the first several years since its founding, the church had rented from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Greenfield.

Aug. 26

In 1973, the Indiana Pacers signed Mike Edwards, a Greenfield High School graduate and Indiana All-Star. He was later released.
