McCORDSVILLE — McCordsville Elementary School (MES) fourth-graders participated in their annual Living History Museum event in May.

Each student was assigned a famous American from Indiana to research and personify for an afternoon. Students were tasked with creating a poster, dressing up as the character and preparing a brief speech that was automated when their “button” was pressed.

Parents and other MES students were invited at the event to see all the hard work the students put into the project. Those who wanted to learn more about each person were able to look at the students’ posters, listen to their speeches, and ask questions if needed.

Some of the famous Americans in attendance included Janet Jackson, Colonel Sanders, Madam C.J. Walker, and Jaycie Phelps, among many famous Hoosiers.

The living history museum project is a hands-on way for students to learn more about famous Hoosiers using research skills, essay writing and public speaking. It also gives students an opportunity to learn more about the history and accomplishments of influential Americans throughout history.
