Five rescued from flooding, storms rip through Hancock County

Strong storms rolled through Hancock County Saturday night knocking over trees and flooding the roads and areas. Spring Lake was hit hard by winds but reported no injuries.

HANCOCK COUNTY — Indiana Conservation Officers assisted Hancock County officials with the rescue of five people from a home surrounded by floodwaters in Hancock County last night.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. officials from Hancock County dispatch received a call regarding five people stranded in a home near the 8500 block of 300 South in Carthage.

Upon arrival, first-responders discovered the home, which was located approximately 1/4 mile off the main roadway, was surrounded by floodwaters from nearby Six Mile Creek. The only access in or out of the home was under multiple feet of swift-moving water.

Using a boat and swift-water rescue equipment, the first-responders reached the home and rescued one adult and four juveniles, with floodwaters only feet from reaching the cabin.

Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by Hancock County Joint Technical Rescue Team. This team consists of Greenfield Fire Department and Sugar Creek Fire Department. Also assisting was Charlottesville Fire Department, Fountaintown Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, and Hancock County Emergency Operation Center 911 Dispatchers.

Strong storms ripped through the county Saturday evening knocking over trees and flooding creeks and roads. Residents in the Spring Lake area experienced strong winds ripping several older trees out of the ground and tossing them about, said Jacob Schoonover, neighborhood resident.

Officials throughout the county are reminding people if they are on the roads today to be careful and do not drive through flooded waters.
