GREENFIELD — Hancock County Voiture Locale 1415 of the 40&8 will conduct its annual Joint Veterans Service Organization Flag Disposal ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at The “La Place” 40&8 recreational property at 2344 S. County Road 275E (Steele Ford Road).

The ceremony will include representatives from American Legion Post 119, VFW Post 2693 and Voiture Locale 1415. U.S. military veterans of Hancock County have conducted the ceremony for more than 40 years.

Participants from each veterans service organization will gather at 7 p.m. and the event will begin at 7:25 p.m. with a bugler sounding “Call to Attention.” The disposal ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony takes less than 30 minutes, but once ignited, the materials will burn for an hour or more.

If the weather is uncooperative, the ceremony will be postponed until 7 p.m. the following evening, Sunday, June 16.

The public is invited to attend and bring unserviceable U.S. flags to be properly disposed of during the ceremony. Traditionally, more than 1,000 worn, used and otherwise unserviceable U.S. flags are disposed of during the event.

After the ceremony, complementary snacks and refreshments will be served.
