Dragons selected to all-star games

New Palestine baseball pitcher Jack Walker has been selected to take part in the annual North/South All-Star Game.

The senior, a four-year starter for the Dragons, will play in the event the weekend of June 21 through 23 at Madison High School. He joins two other Dragons, softball players Emily O’Connor and Jaylin Calvert, who will play that weekend in all-star games.

A pair of Dragons tennis seniors, Claire Cherry and Josee King, also will be competing in all-star competition. The doubles duo was selected to the North/South All-Star Tennis Cup this weekend.

5K event to benefit military families

Helping Hands For Freedom and Energy2Action are joining forces for the second Hero Hustle run/walk event.

The event will be Saturday at 6 p.m. It will start and finish at Riverfront Taproom in Shelbyville.

Free beer or beverage will be provided for each participant, along with a medal for each finisher. Riverfront Taproom Growlers will be given to overall winners from first to third and gift certificates for age group winners from first to third place.

Registration is $30 with a shirt or $25 without.

5v5 basketball tournament set for Riley Park

A group of Mt. Vernon athletes have put together a winner-take-all basketball tournament scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 14 at Riley Park in Greenfield.

Seniors Peyton Meadors, Max Burhenn and Sam McCarty planned the event, which is a 5v5 tournament that is open to any boys players from the county or Hoosier Heritage Conference that are in high school or older. Buy-in to compete is $20 per team.

The goal of the tournament is simple — the trio hopes to bring people from around the county together to have a fun day of playing basketball.

65th-year reunion of Milan title team set

The 65th reunion of the 1954 Milan Indians state champion team will be commemorated at the Salt Creek Golf Retreat in Nashville, Indiana on July 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The cost is $25 per person, with the profits going to the Milan Museum. Only 100 tickets will be sold.

The event will be followed by the 4th Chuck & Will Kirlin Golf Outing, with all profits going to Chucks Endowment with the Brown County Community Foundation. Cost for the outing will be $300 for a foursome, with tee time at noon.

If you play in the outing, you can attend a meet and greet with players from the Milan team for free. This outing will have prizes from the Cincinnati Reds and the Indiana Pacers.

That afternoon, the Milan vs Terre Haute Gerstmeyer and the final game, Milan vs Muncie Central (the game from the movie Hoosiers), will be shown. For tickets and/or information please call Bob Kirlin at 812-720-0222.
