GREENFIELD — Firefighters with the Greenfield Fire Territory had to shut down U.S. 40 early Tuesday to battle a fire in a house in the 500 block of East Main Street.

Crews from the Greenfield, Sugar Creek Township and Buck Creek Township fire departments responded at about 4:30 a.m. to a report of a fire in the stairwell of the dwelling, which had been divided into upstairs and downstairs apartment units.

While no one was seriously injured, firefighters did have to rescue a tenant who had crawled out onto the roof. The occupant was taken to Hancock Regional Hospital with a report of minor injuries, said Corey Breese, spokesman for the Greenfield Fire Territory. The other resident had escaped before firefighters arrived.

The firefighters were able to contain the fire in the stairwell, keeping it from spreading throughout the two apartments. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes, Breese said.

Fire marshal Brian Lott of the Greenfield Fire Territory said they are still unsure what caused the fire, but he collected samples from the area where they believe the fire started to be sent for further analysis.
