Softball

Marauders stay unbeaten

Mt. Vernon moved to 8-0 on the season by scoring two runs in the fourth inning Tuesday and topping Frankton, 2-1.

The Marauders had 10 hits, led by two each from Syndee Perry, Macey Cox and Riley Hasseld. Macy Griner doubled, and Griner and Cox scored the two Mt. Vernon runs.

Karlee Franklin threw a complete game, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six.

Royals bounce back

Eastern Hancock snapped a short two-game losing streak in a big way Tuesday, getting a 16-0 run-rule win against Morristown.

The Royals racked up 18 hits in the game, led by two each from Faithe Webster, Caroline Stapleton, Sydni Bednarski, Paige Wickard and Eriel Truitt. Taylor Koch homered, Truitt had two doubles and the Royals had five other extra-base hits.

Jessi Potts got the complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out eight.

Cougars fall to Delta

Greenfield-Central fell just short on Tuesday, dropping to 10-2 on the year with a 4-3 loss to Delta.

A two-run home run from Delta in the top of the seventh was the difference in the loss. Lexi Rankin pitched a complete game and had nine.

Jessi Rankin, Lexi Rankin and Macy Francis each had two hits.

Baseball

Dragons get big win

New Palestine avenged last season’s sectional championship loss on Tuesday, topping host Cathedral, 4-3.

Sophomore Noah Mack hit a leadoff homer in the sixth inning to give the Dragons the lead. Joshua Jaques pitched a perfect sixth inning. Jack Walker came on to pitch the seventh and after two batters reached base, the senior stuck out the next three batters to retire the side and end the game.

Joshua Jaques (1-1) got the victory in relief, fanning one in 1 2/3 perfect innings. Starter Jaden Jaques allowed three runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Walker pitched the seventh for his first save.

The Dragons outhit the Irish 9-7. Walker had two doubles. Mack was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Grant Wiegand was also 2-for-3 with a run. Colby Jenkins and Grant Hickman each had a hit and an RBI.

Royals fall in 5

Eastern Hancock dropped a road game Tuesday to host Tri, 13-3.

The Royals had four hits in the game, two from Trey Brown and one each from Wyatt Sutton and Landon Kintner. 

The visitors again used a different pitcher every inning, this time with five pitchers combining to allow 12 hits and seven earned runs.

Dragons top Flashes

New Palestine shot 169 on Tuesday to beat Franklin Central, 169-203, in a nine-hole match at Smock Golf Course.

Josh Shinkle led the Dragons with a 37, tying his personal-best score to become the match medalist. Quinn Dobbins, Chris Guhl and Braeden Baker each shot 44 for the Dragons.

Royals fall to Tigers

Eastern Hancock fell at home on Tuesday, dropping a 4-1 match to visiting Triton Central.

The Royals got their point from the No. 3 singles position, where Kalyn Edwards picked up a 7-5, 6-3 victory. 

Track

Dragons stay perfect

The New Palestine track teams both went down to the last event — the 4×400 relay — Tuesday to clinch victories against Perry Meridian.

The Dragon boys won 68-63 when Josh Collins, Carson Sams, Dylan Harsin and Drew Austin won the 4×400 relay.

The Dragons won 10 events in the meet. Ryker Large won the 100 and 200. Sams clinched the 400. Collins won the 800, Austin the 1,600 and Kyler Harrison the 3,200. Spencer Worth won the pole vault and Christian Rudolph the 110 hurdles.

The 4×800 team of Collins, Owen Kleine, Sams and Devon Whitaker also began the meet with a victory.

The Dragon girls won 71-61, with the win clinched when Sophia Taylor, Maigan Williams, Kaylin Casner and Jordan Reid won the 4×400 relay.

The Dragons won nine events, including all three relays. Maya Hobbs, Addie Halter, Taylor Kelley and Reid won the 4×100. Emma Mann, Emily Adam, Megan Collins and Grace Voelz won the 4×800.

Individual winners were Casner in the 800 and 1,600, Aden Lumbley in the shot put and discus, Williams in the 300 hurdles and Kendall Mann in the 3200.
