NEW PALESTINE — Students at Zion Lutheran School recently tried their hand at besting the destructive capabilities of gravity.

Students in the first through fourth grades were challenged to construct a contraption that would best protect an egg when dropped from a height of one meter; fifth- and sixth-graders had to design for a height of two meters, while seventh- and eighth-graders were challenged to design protective gear for an egg dropped from three meters.

They were allowed to choose their own materials but had to keep its dimensions to 12 x 12 x 12 centimeters. Scoring was based primarily on condition of the egg after the drop and accuracy in hitting the target when dropped.

Winning students in third through eighth grades who placed at the top of their grade levels were invited to compete in Lutheran High School’s annual SciFest. The third/fourth division will be represented by Autumn Day, Eleanor Everhart, Ella Morris, Clara Rubin and Josiah Werner.

Jeremiah Anderson, Lucy Bailey, Daniel Kleiman, Delaney Pass, Elijah Taylor, J.J. Ward, and Chloe Webb will compete for the fifth- and sixth-grade division.

Brianne Randall, Amanda Steward, Danielle Taylor, Paige Taylor, and Micah Werner moved on in the seventh- and eighth-grade division.
