HANCOCK COUNTY — Detectives are investigating the circumstances of a shooting Friday in which a man was injured.

Matthew Stahl, 28, of Anderson, suffered a gunshot wound in the arm after a confrontation that began when Stahl and a woman from Greenfield, Amanda Howe, 35, stopped their cars at the intersection of County Roads 400E and 600N. The nature of the confrontation was not clear, but Robert Harris, public information officer for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, said the two apparently knew each other.

Harris and Detective Ted Munden said that during the confrontation, the woman retrieved a handgun and fired at Stahl. He was struck in the arm.

Paramedics took Stahl to Hancock Regional Hospital, and he later was transferred to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment, Munden said. His injury was not believed to be life-threatening, Harris said.

Howe was taken to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department for questioning and was released. Stahl will be questioned once he has been treated, Munden said. Neither was immediately arrested. Munden said the investigation will continue.

A small child in the back of Howe’s car at the time of the incident was turned over to the father, who was not involved in the incident, Harris said.
