Softball

Cougars outlast Westfield

Greenfield-Central improved to 8-1 on the season with a 7-6, eight-inning win Wednesday against Westfield.

In top of eighth, Kensie Bradley led off with single and Megan Wineinger sacrificed her over. An intentional walk to Sam Kihega followed. With two outs, Emily Francis hit a two-RBI double to right center, giving the Cougars the winning runs.

Westfield got one run back in the bottom of the inning but fell short.

Royals get big win

Eastern Hancock improved to 2-0 with an offensive showcase on Wednesday, blasting past Blue River Valley, 20-0.

The Royals scored nine runs in the first inning and 10 in the second to quickly put the game away. Jessi Potts threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 13.

Eastern Hancock drew 12 walks and had 10 hits, led by led by two each from Bre Taulbee and Sydni Bednarski. Bednarski had three RBIs and Kaylee Stewart had two in the win.

Dragons rally falls short

New Palestine rallied from a three-run deficit Wednesday, but saw host Connersville break a tie in the fifth and beat the Dragons, 6-4.

The Dragons were outhit 8-7. Trevor Rush was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Bain and Eric Roudebush both doubled. Colby Jenkins, Jack Walker and Grant Wiegand hit singles.

New Palestine’s pitchers combined to allow just one earned run, as five of the Spartans’ six runs were unearned. Joshua Jaques struck out one and allowed three hits and no earned runs through two innings. Jaden Jaques took the decision, despite allowing one earned run, five hits and striking out three over four innings.

Royals fall on road

Eastern Hancock dropped to 0-4 on the season with a 13-3 loss to Indianapolis Ritter on Wednesday.

The Royals offense was held to three hits in the game, doubles from Andy Locker and Ryan Burris and a single from Trey Brown. Locker drove in two runs and Burris the third.

Five Eastern Hancock pitchers combined to allow the 13 runs, giving up just five hits but walking 11.

Boys golf

Cougars best Fishers

Greenfield-Central picked up a big win Wednesday by defeating Fishers, shooting a near-school record to win, 150 to 155.

Canyen Palmer was match medalist and led the Cougars with a 35. He was followed closely by Kyle Arrowood’s 36. Zach Archer’s 39 and Noah Mohler’s 40 rounded out the Greenfield-Central scoring.

Girls tennis

Marauders beat Raiders

Mt. Vernon had its first home match of the season Wednesday, and topped a solid Shenandoah team, 5-0.

No. 3 singles player Louisa Batge got the Marauders on the board with a dominant 6-0 6-2 win. She was followed by No. 1 singles Lydia Ruegsegger, who won 6-2, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, Maeve Laughlin and Alexis Lane picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win.

With the match in hand, the final two matches went to three sets. At No. 2 singles, Kaleigh Helm won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. At No. 2 doubles, Lexi Shelton and Maddie Swingle picked up a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory.

Royals topple Trojans

Eastern Hancock got a big win against New Castle on Wednesday, 3-2.

The Royals won at all three singles spots, led by a 6-0, 6-1 win from Cassandra Hannemann at No. 1 singles. Valentina Brooks won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and at No. 3 singles, Corina Jennings won 6-3, 6-0.
