Marauders fall to Westfield

Visiting Westfield jumped out to a first-inning lead against Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, and rode the momentum from a 5-0 start to a 5-2 victory against the hosts.

Mt. Vernon tallied five hits in the game, with Sam McCarty doubling and driving in a run, Hunter Dobbins notching two singles and an RBI and Austin Sumner and Jake Stadler each recording a single.

Matt Lood pitched six innings for Mt. Vernon, striking out seven and allowing five hits and five earned runs. Payton Bovard came on in relief, allowing one hit and no runs in the seventh.

Boys golf

Dragons top Cougars, Whiteland

New Palestine won its first triangular match of the season Tuesday at Hawk’s Tail in Greenfield. The Dragons shot a nine-hole score of 159 to beat Greenfield-Central (168) and Whiteland (170).

New Palestine’s Quinn Dobbins was the match medalist, shooting 36. Chris Guhl, Matt Barada and Braden Baker all shot 41.

Greenfield-Central’s Kyle Arrowood was second with a 37 and Noah Mohler started off his season with a 40.

Marauders top Triton Central

Mt. Vernon won the first dual of the season at Arrowhead Golf Course, topping Triton Central, 153 to 168.

Blake Johnson was medalist with a 36. Sam McWilliams shot a 37, John Husar and Haiden Rose shot 40 and Elijah Dunham had a 51.

Royals finish 2nd at tri match

Eastern Hancock took on New Castle and Muncie Burris on Tuesday in a triangular match, finishing behind the hosts in second.

New Castle won with a 152, Eastern Hancock shot a 186 and Muncie Burris finished with a 229.

Girls tennis

Dragons win close match

New Palestine won a tight 3-2 match Tuesday against Triton Central.

At No. 1 singles, Megan Long won a tight first set and then dominated, winning 7-6(5), 6-0. The Dragons also swept the doubles. Claire Cherry and Josee King won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Sheridan Schrowe and Ashley Truman were dominant in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Nicole Wernimont dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles. Caylie Almond played her first varsity match at No. 3 and fell 6-4, 6-1.

Cougars earn first victory

Greenfield-Central earned its first win of the season against Morristown on Tuesday night, 3-2.

Both No. 1 doubles Aly Proper and Erin Wright and No. 2 doubles Kaleigh Stephenson and Grace Silcox got the night started with quick sets giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Proper and Wright won 6-1, 6-1 and Stephenson and Silcox won 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Grace Hall pulled away in the second set for a 6-4, 6-1 win, giving the Cougars the team victory.

Track and field

Cougars, Marauders win at New Castle

Greenfield-Central’s boys team defeated New Castle on Tuesday, while the Mt. Vernon girls topped both the Trojans and Cougars.

The Cougars boys beat the Trojans, 75-55. 

Adam Lee and Cody Hargett each set a new school record in the pole vault at 14 feet, 6 inches. Tate Helm won both the shot put and discus. Seth Hudson won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Brock Wheeler won the 200 and the high jump. Wyatt Looper won the 100, Luke Muckerheide won the 1,600, Jacob Holman won the long jump and the 4×800 relay also picked up a win.

On the girls side, Mt. Vernon won with 66 points, with New Castle at 56 and Greenfield-Central at 43. Greenfield-Central had another record-breaking performance in the loss, with Audrey Brinkruff breaking the record in, the 1,600 with a time of 5:22.
