Marauders win doubleheader

Mt. Vernon moved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of Saturday wins against Indianapolis Lutheran, 5-3 and 11-7.

Karlee Franklin threw a complete game in the opener, striking out five and allowing 10 hits and three earned runs in the win. Anelise Worden doubled and drove in two runs, and Sydnee Perry had two hits and two RBIs.

Molly Buck got the win in the second game, striking out four and allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. The Marauders offense nearly tripled its hitting production from the first game, with Riley Hasseld leading the way with three hits and three RBIs. Macey Cox, Macy Griner, Haley Kissee and Allison Myers each had two hits. Kissee tripled twice, and Cox and Perry each homered. 

Cougars improve to 7-0

Greenfield-Central won back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend, with two Friday night wins against Wapahani followed by 7-3 and 9-8 wins against Southport on Saturday.

Lexi Rankin threw seven shutout innings and led the Cougars to a 4-0 win in Friday’s first game. Sam Kihega homered for the Cougars. In the second game, a 3-2 win, Macy Fultz threw six innings and Rankin threw one. Jessie Rankin led the Cougars offense with two hits and two RBIs.

Lexi Rankin threw another complete game and had eight strikeouts in Saturday’s first game, a 7-3 win. Three Cougars hit home runs — Lexi Rankin, Kihega and Hannah Holden. Kihega had four RBIs for Greenfield-Central. Ellie Ewald led the team with three base hits. 

In Saturday’s second game, a 9-8, eight-inning win, Fultz threw five innings and Lexi Rankin threw three, combining to strike out nine batters. A pair of walks in the eighth inning set the stage for Macy Francis, who singled home the winning run. Keryna Barrett homered and drove in four runs and Kihega led the offense with three hits.

Baseball

Cougars drop doubleheader

Greenfield-Central started off Hoosier Heritage Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader against New Castle.

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game but saw the Trojans score the next nine. New Castle won, 12-6. In the second game, the Cougars again scored in the first but never scored again, falling 2-1 to the Trojans.

Dragons cruise past Trojans

New Palestine shut out New Castle for its first HHC victory Friday. The Dragons won 5-0, dropping only eight games in the process.

At No. 1 singles, Megan Long won 6-0, 6-0, followed by Nicole Wernimont at No. 2 (6-1, 6-0). At No. 3 singles, Eliza Adams won her first varsity match for the Dragons, a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

At doubles, Claire Cherry and Josee King won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, while the No. 2 team of Sheridan Schrowe and Ashley Truman won 6-2, 6-0.

Marauders, Dragons compete at invite

Mt. Vernon and New Palestine golfers competed in Saturday’s Yorktown Invite at The Players Club, with the Marauders earning a fifth-place finish and the Dragons finishing eighth out of 16 teams.

Noblesville won with a 300 and was followed by a 316 from New Castle and a 326 from Muncie Central. 

Mt. Vernon shot a 338. Sam McWilliams led the Marauders with a six-over-par 78. Haiden Rose shot an 86, Elijah Dunham and Blake Johnson each shot 87 and John Husar had an 88.

New Palestine shot a 358. Quinn Dobbins led the way for the Dragons with an 87. Josh Shinkle shot 88, Chris Guhl 89 and Matt Kelley 94. Austin Terry’s 103 was the fifth score.
