Dragons top Cougars, Bears

The New Palestine track teams swept a triangular meet Thursday at Greenfield-Central.

The Dragon boys tallied 77 points to beat host Greenfield-Central (54) and Shelbyville (35). The Dragon girls won with 81 points, with Greenfield-Central tallying 44 and Shelbyville 42.

Leading the way for the Dragon boys was quadruple-winner Laine Schonauer. He won the 200, 400, high jump and teamed with Owen Kleine, Carson Sams and Drew Austin to win the 4×400. Kleine, Sams, Austin and Devon Whitaker won the 4×800.

Josh Collins also won two individual events, taking the 1,600 and 3,200. Ryker Large won the 100 and Whitaker the 800.

The Cougars boys picked up five event wins, with Seth Hudson winning the 110 and 300 hurdles, Adam Lee taking the pole vault and Tate Helm winning both the shot put and discus.

Leading the way for the Dragon girls was triple-winner Jordan Reid, who won the 100 and 200. She teamed with Taylor Kelley, Megan Bell and Maya Hobbs to win the 4×100. Several other Dragons had multiple wins. Victoria Crowder won the 400 and was part of two winning relays. Grace Voelz won the 800. Kendall Mann took the 1,600 and Kaylin Casner the 3,200. Aden Lumbley won the shot put.

Maigan Williams, Emma Mann, Crowder and Sophia Taylor won the 4×400. Casner, Voelz, Megan Collins and Crowder won the 4×800.

Crystal Peterson won the 100 and 300 hurdles and also placed second in long jump for the Cougars. Kenzie Polster won the high jump and also scored in the 800, placing fourth. Kayana Maroska scored in three events, placing second in the 200, third in the 400, and fourth in the long jump.

Hannah Burkhart won the discus, Audrey Brinkruff had nearly broke the school record in a second-place finish in the 3,200, and Olivia Moss picked up a point, placing fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Softball

Marauders offense on fire in win

Mt. Vernon improved to 2-0 on the season with a run-rule win on Thursday, 21-0 over visiting Arsenal Tech.

The Marauders jumped on the visitors early, scoring eight runs in both the first and second inning. A one-run third and four-run fourth rounded out the scoring.

Mt. Vernon takes on Indianapolis Lutheran today in a doubleheader at home.

Baseball

Dragons fall to Flashes

New Palestine dropped an 11-1 decision Thursday at Franklin Central.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jack Walker’s double drove home Jacob Bain. The hosts answered to tie the game in the bottom of the first, extended the lead with a run in the second, then added four in the third and five in the fourth.

The Dragons also got hits from Noah Mack and Trevor Rush.

Three Dragons pitched, with starter Jaden Jaques taking the decision and throwing 2 1/3 innings. The Dragons allowed six hits in the loss.

Girls tennis

Marauders blank Arabians

Mt. Vernon opened up its 2019 season with a quick win against conference foe Pendleton Heights on Thursday, picking up a clean 5-0 win.

Lydia Ruegsegger won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Kaleigh Helm won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Louisa Batge won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Maeve Laughlin and Alexis Lane also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win, while the No. 2 pairing of Lexi Shelton and Maddie Swingle won 6-1, 6-0.

Cougars lose marathon opener

Greenfield-Central lost a close match to open the season Thursday against Alexandria, 3-2.

The match came down to five three-set matches. At No. 1 singles, Avery Spencer picked up the 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win. At No. 2 singles, Grace Hall lost 1-6, 6-4, 4-6. The second win for the Cougars came from No. 3 singles player Nae Pattakul. Pattakul won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Erin Wright and Aly Proper fell 4-6, 6-1, 4-6. At No. 2 doubles, Kaleigh Stephenson and Grace Silcox dropped a 7-6(7-5), 1-6, 3-6 match.
