GREENFIELD — Two teen-agers have been arrested and charged with armed robbery and pointing a weapon after a foot chase on the north side of Greenfield late Wednesday afternoon.

The incident apparently was triggered by the robbery of a man who came from Indianapolis to buy an iPhone from the two young men, who are 16 and 17 years old. Instead of selling the man the phone, they took his money and ran.

Soon thereafter, about 5 p.m., 911 callers reported seeing two people on foot — one of them brandishing a handgun — being chased by a man in a black SUV near the 600 block of Florence Drive. One of the callers said the SUV hit a tree during the chase.

The chase started in an area off Martindale Drive just east of the Kohl’s/PetSmart shopping center, and it quickly moved to the area around WalMart, about a quarter-mile south.

Once police found the SUV and stopped it, they learned the driver, 22, had been trying to chase down the young suspects. He told police one of the young men pointed a gun at him during the robbery.

The two suspects were seen running south in front of Walmart, carrying a gun and knapsack, a police report said. Around 5:30 p.m., they were seen running southbound on Oak Boulevard at Grandison Road, nearly a mile away, the report stated. The two suspects were eventually captured by police in that area and were positively identified by the victim.

Officers received information from a witness in the area who identified the suspects. One is from Greenfield and the other is from Indianapolis. Officers went to a residence the young men were visiting and recovered the weapon and some of the stolen money.

Both juveniles were taken to the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Facility, where they will remain. Officials there said the juveniles will have up to 48 hours after their arrest before they will appear before a judge, who will determine if they remain in jail or will be released while their case goes through the criminal justice system. They face Level 2 felony charges of armed robbery and Level 6 felony charges of pointing a firearm.

Neither suspect had been returned to Hancock County to see a judge as of press time.
