MCCORDSVILLE — The McCordsville Police Department is looking for two men who shot at a woman’s car early Tuesday morning in the Gateway Crossing apartment complex after a failed robbery attempt.

The woman told police two men approached her around 5 a.m. Tuesday morning as she was getting out of her vehicle and told her to put her hands up, according to a police report.

The woman screamed and was able to get away from the assailants. One of them, armed with a shotgun, fired a blast through one of the windows of her car before they both fled on foot. They were seen getting into a light-colored sedan that headed north onto Kensington Way, leading out of the Gateway Crossing development.

No one was injured in the incident, and police are asking residents in the area to be careful and to watch for suspicious behavior.

Police are treating the incident as an attempted robbery/carjacking. While the victim was able to run into her apartment before the shot was fired, Maj. Paul Casey, deputy chief of the McCordsville Police Department, said the attack was terrifying for the McCordsville woman.

"It was a very, very scary situation for the lady, and we’re just glad that no one was hurt," Casey said.

Police have only vague descriptions of the two men. One was identified as black and about 5 feet 7 inches tall. The other man was Asian and was somewhat shorter than his partner, police said.

The police have not had any issues of crime or trouble in the area around the apartment complex, which is west of CR 600W along State Road 67. However, Casey reminds area residents to never leave their cars running unattended, and to always be aware of their surroundings, especially in the dark.

Officers from several agencies responded to the call: Jeremiah Carder and Audrey Sleeth of the McCordsville Police Department; Derek Archer of the Fortville Police Department; Caleb Freeman of the Greenfield Police Department; and Richard Vanosdol, Mark Galbraith and Matthew Kelly from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the McCordsville Police Department at 317-335-2812.
