To the editor:

I appreciate Michael Adkins’ views on changes in the relationship the Democratic and Republican parties have with the American people. ("Polls show U.S. politics have moved left," Feb. 23, Page A4.)

Democrats are becoming increasingly liberal, and Republicans continue their decades-long slide toward further conservatism. And the American people are following the Democrats.

I agree with this assessment for the most part. I do see some differences, though. There is a significant part of our society that is conservative, some increasingly so. They mistrust government and liberal political and social leaders.

And there are, in some ways, very little difference between Democrats and Republicans. When it comes to support for business and industrial interests, there often is little difference. For some time, I have referred to our having a one-party system, the "Demicans" and "Republicrats." More recently, I see that one-party system being made up of the Demicans and Republicans. While I see our society becoming more liberal I believe our political system has more of a liberal and conservative mix.
