GREENFIELD — Two Hancock County schools drew first-round byes in the IHSAA boys basketball state tournament, while the other two will square off in an opening-round game Tuesday.

The draw, conducted Sunday afternoon, revealed pairings for each state sectional. Hancock County teams will compete in Sectional 9 at Richmond and Sectional 42 at Knightstown.

In Sectional 9, the Mt. Vernon Marauders drew the bye for the second straight year and will compete in a March 1 semifinal game against the winner of an opening round game between Pendleton Heights and Richmond. New Palestine and Greenfield-Central will clash in the other first-round game, with the winner meeting Connersville in the other semifinal.

It will be the second time the Dragons and Cougars meet this year. New Palestine won its season-opener at Greenfield-Central on Dec. 7, 75-65.

In Sectional 42, Eastern Hancock broke a long streak — 23 years — by finally drawing another first-round bye. The Royals will meet the winner of Tuesday’s second game between Shenandoah and Knightstown. The other first-round matchup in the Knightstown sectional features Indianapolis Howe and Triton Central, with the winner meeting Irvington Prep Academy in the semifinal round.

A full sectional preview, with breakdowns and complete schedules, will appear in Tuesday’s Daily Reporter.
