HANCOCK COUNTY — The 2019 Hancock County Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is coming in March, and event organizers are looking for participants.

The Citizens Academy will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning March 5 and lasting nine weeks. The 10th week will be a field day and will include range time with firearms.

The Sheriff’s Citizen Academy takes a look into the daily responsibilities and operation of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Event organizers say educating county citizens will aid in police and community relationships and will help dispel any misconceptions or misunderstanding surrounding police work.

In turn, the sheriff’s department becomes more aware of the feeling and concerns of the community through input from the students.

Anyone interested must be at least 18 years of age or older and live or work in Hancock County.

Classes are free and limited to the first 24 participants. Applicants cannot have a felony conviction and must pass a background check.

People who are interested in attending can download an application at the department’s website at sheriffweb.hancockcoingov.org and click on Citizen Academy.

Applications can be mailed to those interested by calling (317) 477-1147 or can be picked up at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department 123 E. Main Street, Greenfield.

Interested parties can also download an application at the official Sheriff’s website at sheriffweb.hancockcoingov.org and click on Sheriff’s Citizen Academy toward the bottom of the page.
