GREENFIELD — Hancock County’s girls basketball teams mostly know who they will be facing off against as next week’s sectionals get underway.

The IHSAA draw, conducted Sunday, was favorable on paper to area teams, with none having a more beneficial draw than Hoosier Heritage Conference champion New Palestine. The Dragons drew the only bye of the tournament among the four Hancock County teams, jumping straight to the Feb. 1 semifinal round.

The Dragons are part of Class 4A’s Sectional 9 with host Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central. The Marauders will open tournament play Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Connersville, while Greenfield-Central follows with a 7:30 p.m. game against Richmond. The winner of Mt. Vernon’s game will play Pendleton Heights on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m., while the Dragons await the Greenfield-Central/Richmond winner in the 7:30 p.m. game that night.

Eastern Hancock plays in Class 2A’s Sectional 42, hosted at Shenandoah, where they drew Irvington Prep Academy in the opening round, a game slated for Tuesday’s second game. If they win, the Royals would advance to face No. 2 Triton Central in the second game on Feb. 1.

Championship games for both sectionals will be played Feb. 2.

A story previewing both sectionals, with breakdowns and full schedules, will appear in an upcoming edition of the Daily Reporter before the tournament starts.
