Sweet singing in the choir

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community Choir member Joy Gradowski sat at a table near the piano, a cup of honey tea in front of her — a soothing elixir for her throat after a recent bout of bronchitis. Nearby, a small group worked through the particulars of an a capella version of “Jingle Bells.”

Gradowski is one of the 40-plus members of the Greenfield Community Choir who gather weekly at the Greenfield Christian Church for two hours of fellowship and singing. The group is in rehearsal for its upcoming Christmas concert, “Christmas is in the Air,” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Bradley United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main St.

Gradowski has been a member of the choir for four years. A neighbor gave her a flier about the group.

“I didn’t even know we had a choir,” Gradowski admitted, “but she invited me, and it’s been no looking back since then.”

The Greenfield Community Choir’s Christmas concert is one of four major performances the group gives throughout the year.

Second-director Shockley Flick, who also serves as choir director at Park Chapel Christian Church, has worked on making the concerts more engaging. The Christmas concert will feature Eastern Hancock band teacher Dan Buckalew on drums, Daries Jones on trumpet, Renee Huffman on flute, choir member Angela Mickler on string bass and violin along with Chris Gordon on piano.

The concert also includes some narration as guidance to the audience to know what to listen for in each of the songs, Flick added.

The Greenfield Community Choir celebrates its 45th year in 2018. Choir member Loretta Canter has been with the group since the beginning and has memories of Christmas concerts past.

“The Colts were playing and it was snowing and it was still a packed house,” Canter reminisces.

Tickets for the hour-long performance are available at the door for $10 per person or $15 per family.
