GREENFIELD — A woman told local police a man punched her in the face nearly a dozen times before kicking her out of his car and leaving her alone on the side of the road.

During the course of an argument, the man threatened her with a utility knife and held the weapon to her neck, according to court documents. She admitted to investigators that she feared for her life.

Now, the man — Scott Smith, 52, of Indianapolis — faces felony charges. He was being held in the Hancock County Jail at press time. He was expected to make his first court appearance Tuesday.

Hancock County sheriff’s deputies found the woman alone in the 2200 block of West County Road 300S in Greenfield around 9 p.m. on Oct. 11. The woman had flagged down a passing driver and asked for help; her cellphone, wallet and keys were still in Smith’s truck, she later told police.

The woman had suffered several facial injuries, deputies wrote in their reports.

The woman told the deputies she was riding with Smith in his truck when an argument started.

Their quarrel eventually became physical, and Smith punched her in the face at least 10 times, she told investigators. At one point, he pulled out the utility knife — described by the woman as a box-cutter — and threatened her with it, according to court documents.

He held the knife to her throat, and she was afraid he might kill her, she told investigators.

Then, Smith kicked her out of his vehicle and drove away.

Smith was picked up by police over the weekend. He faces: one Level 3 felony count of criminal confinement with a deadly weapon; one Level 5 felony count of intimidation; one Level 5 felony count of domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury; one Level 6 felony count of invasion of privacy; and one Class A misdemeanor count of theft.
