MT. COMFORT — Hancock Regional Hospital is making progress on construction of a new facility near Mt. Comfort Road and Interstate 70 that will aim to provide affordable services for people in a growing part of the county.

The facility is expected to open sometime in June 2019, CEO Steve Long said. Long and executives at the hospital held a ground-breaking ceremony this week as excavation ramps up on the site.

The facility, located at I-70 and County Road 600W, will primarily serve as an imaging and lab station, but it will also feature an urgent-care facility, Long said.

Hancock Health saw the need for low-cost diagnostic and urgent care for citizens in the western townships of Hancock County, Long said. The average age of residents in McCordsville, for example, is 34, which means people living there often have high-deductible health plans, he said.

This project aims to provide them with an option that gives them the attention and care they need without resorting to expensive care, he said.

The facility will be the first of its kind, Long said. Its location is convenient and strategic: It sits at a major gateway into Hancock County, and it’s designed to attract patients from a wide area.

“This is a new thing for the area,” Long said. “It will be the only low-cost, full-diagnostic health-care service in Hancock County.”
