HANCOCK COUNTY — American Legion Post No. 182 announces the winners of its annual poetry contest.

In the middle school category:

First — Quin Lumbley (New Palestine Jr. High); Second — Lily Haeberle (New Palestine Jr. High); Third — Grace Hasenkamp (New Palestine Jr. High); First Honorable Mention — Alyssa Kauchak (New Palestine Jr. High); Second Honorable Mention — Ozair Fasih (New Palestine Jr. High); Third Honorable Mention — Jack Rossell (New Palestine Jr. High); Fourth Honorable Mention — Lauren Hankins (New Palestine Intermediate School)

In the elementary school category:

First — Lillian Wooton (New Palestine Intermediate School); Second — Marissa Dillon (New Palestine Intermediate School); Third — Lydia Wilson (New Palestine Intermediate School); First Honorable Mention — Haley Shields (New Palestine Intermediate School); Second Honorable Mention — Ava Flannagan (New Palestine Intermediate School); Third Honorable Mention — Madison Johnson (New Palestine Intermediate School); Fourth Honorable Mention — Lauren Hankins (New Palestine Intermediate School)

First place winners were awarded $50; second place received $25; third place earned $15. Honorable mention winners were presented with a ribbon and a certificate.

The requirements for the competition were that the poem had to be: about a military veteran, 24 lines or less and the poem had to rhyme.

Awards were presented Oct. 17 at the New Palestine Lions Club building.
