GREENFIELD — A nearly $200,000 repair to the Hancock County Courthouse is expected to wrap up Friday, a county official says.

Work has been underway at the county courthouse since early August to fix the building’s leaking roof.

Brad Armstrong, president of the Hancock County Board of Commissioners, said the contractor of the project, Noblesville-based Blackmore and Buckner Roofing LLC, agreed to finish the repairs by Friday, less than a week before the annual Riley Festival in downtown Greenfield from Oct. 4 to 7.

“I’m real confident we’ve got a good repair and be out of the way in time for Riley Days,” Armstrong said.

The repair, which should fix the roof for the next 20 years, consisted of removing areas of the roof’s tile and replacing the defective foam seal underneath, Armstrong said. In order to reach tile on the building’s clock tower, construction crews used a large crane, which blocked off parts of downtown.

“I know it’s been a nuisance to be in the way a little bit,” Armstrong said, adding he’s appreciative of the cooperation between downtown merchants and construction workers.

Armstrong said crews have dealt with rainy weather, which included Monday and Tuesday of this week.

“The nice thing about having some rain in the middle of (the project) is it gives you a chance to make sure everything is fixed properly,” Armstrong said.

The project cost the county $198,500, which the Hancock County Council allocated from the county’s food and beverage fund. Armstrong said the courthouse roof was last replaced around 2001.
