Riley Festival plans contest traditions

GREENFIELD — The annual Riley Festival, Oct. 4-7, promises live entertainment, vendors, food trucks and more. But each year, the downtown Greenfield event also encourages the community to step up and show off their finest cakes, cookies, needlework and quilts. Keep reading to see more information about the rules and important dates for the Riley Festival’s traditional contests.

Baker’s Best Contest

Feature your favorite cherry recipe in this year’s Riley Festival Baker’s Best contest sponsored in tandem by Tuttle Orchards and Hancock County Extension Homemakers. This contest is open to any Hancock County resident or Hancock County Extension Homemaker.

The classes for entry are as follows:

Six cookies or dessert bars

One cake or 6 cupcakes.

One pie, tart or cobbler

Quick breads: one loaf, 6 muffins, biscuits, scones, etc.

Yeast Breads: one loaf, one tea ring, or 6 rolls (dinner or sweet)

Other Baked Goods, Cheesecakes are allowed, but they must be refrigerated and brought to the contest in a cooler/insulated container

All entries, made by the exhibitor, must feature cherries in the baked or filling portion of the product and are due at the Hancock County Extension Office Meeting Room, 802 North Apple Street, Greenfield, Indiana on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Arts & Quilt Show

Have you been creative in a craft or revealed your cooking genius this year and wish to display your imaginative and inventive streak? Boast your goods with an entry at the Home Arts and Quilt Show during the 2018 Riley Festival on Oct. 4-7. Located in the Courthouse Annex, 111 American Legion Place, the show, which is in an ADA-compliant facility, is sponsored by the Hancock County Extension Homemakers and will feature innovative and talented individuals’ original wares. The show is open to everyone, and entrants need not be Hancock County residents.

Entries will be judged and awarded ribbons in the following age divisions: Junior Level-16 years of age and younger, and Senior Level-17 years of age and older. Exhibit your creative juices in food preparation, food preservation, quilting, sewing, needlecraft, painting, dolls, toys, wood, leather working and much more. Younger competitors may wish to feature their 4-H exhibits or anything else they may have created. All antique and collectible entries will receive participation ribbons.

All entries are due Oct. 3 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex. Parking is available directly south of the building or on South Street east of American Legion Place. The show will be open to the public during festival hours beginning at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 through 5 p.m. Oct. 7.
