Boys soccer

Marauders fall to tough team

Mt. Vernon lost at home Thursday to visiting Hamilton Southeastern, ranked in the top five in the state, 3-0.

The team played aggressive and fought for the 80 minutes but couldn’t get a goal across. Mt. Vernon is now 7-2 on the year.

Girls soccer

Mt. Vernon falls to top team

Mt. Vernon took to the road to take on the state’s top ranked ranked, Hamilton Southeastern, on Thursday, and fell 7-1.

Alexi Hardie had the goal for the Marauders, who chose to play the hosts straight up and not with a bunker defense. The Marauders loss was their first this season, as they are now 10-1.

Marauders win on senior night

Mt. Vernon shot one of its best scores of the year and beat the conference champions Pendleton Heights on Thursday, 179-193, on senior night

Senior Ava Hampton led the Marauders with a 44. Senior Lily Hampton added a 48, senior Savannah McKemie a 52, freshman Meredith Johnson had a 44 and freshman Alaina Nugent had a 43.

Royals close season with win

Eastern Hancock wrapped up the regular season with a win against Centerville on Thursday, 231-238.

Jocelyn Duncan and Shelby Jackson were medalists for the Royals with 56s. Daly Pelger helped with a 57 and Bella Parker came in with a 62.

Tennis

Marauders get another win

Mt. Vernon wasted little time getting the three points needed to clinch Thursday’s match against New Castle, winning 4-1 and moving to 5-0 in the conference and 12-1 overall.

Sam McCarty won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, staying undefeated at 13-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Braeden Browning and Peyton Meadors won 6-0, 6-1. Chris Hays won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Sam Frye and Jackson Dunlavy won 6-2, 7-5.

Royals sweep Morristown

Eastern Hancock picked up its second straight 5-0 win on Thursday, topping Morristown on the road.

The Royals got wins from in straight sets from No. 1 singles Kodey Huff, 6-1, 6-1; No. 2 singles Ian White, 6-4, 6-0; No. 1 doubles of Keegan Bowman and Brady Ellis, 6-0, 6-0; and No. 2 doubles of Peyton Robertson and Sammy Blocher, 6-0, 6-1.

John McDaniel got a forfeit win at No. 3 singles.

Cougars edge Alexandria-Monroe

Greenfield-Central had a close match against Alexandria on Thursday night, pulling out the 3-2 win.

Throughout the night there were a total of three tiebreaks and a third set that determined the match. After losing both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, the Cougars go their first point from No. 2 doubles with a 6-0, 7-5 win.

The second point for the Cougars came from No. 3 singles, Seth Kirkpatrick, who won 7-6(7-0), 6-2. In the deciding match, at No. 1 doubles, Mason Bussel and Collin Hunt went to a tiebreak in both the first and second set before winning 7-6(7-5), 6-7(4-7), 6-1.

Dragons sweep again

New Palestine won its third match in as many days by a 5-0 score Thursday, beating Triton Central.

Matthew True won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Carson Gavin won 6-2, 6-2 and Trevor Darley fought hard to win 6-4, 6-3.

At doubles, Dane Reid and Ben Blachly were in control throughout a 6-0, 6-1 win. Ezra Schwier and Devon Bird rallied to win 6-4, 6-2 in their first varsity match as a duo.

Volleyball

Dragons drop Arabians

New Palestine posted its first Hoosier Heritage Conference victory of the year Thursday, beating Pendleton Heights 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21.

The Dragon defense was strong against a potent Arabians attack. Lydia Jones had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Rylie Sturgeon also had 14 digs. Sydney Robertson added 10 digs and 46 assists. Audrey VanderWal had eight digs.

Offensively, Jesi Hall and Lauren Dodd each had 11 kills, giving the Dragons three players with double-digit kills.

Marauders drop close match

Mt. Vernon lost to another top-level team on Thursday, this time a 3-1 loss against New Castle, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 19-25.

Cecilia Bulmahn led the way with 14 kills and added four digs. Claire Ertel had nine kills, eight digs and an assist. Victoria Bulmahn had four kills, an ace, five blocks, seven digs and 29 assists. Sophie Schultz added 12 digs.

Cougars sweep Shelbyville

Greenfield-Central earned a win Thursday night against HHC conference foe Shelbyville, 25-17, 25-12, 25-11.

Ava Antic led the offense with 12 kills, while Makayla Price added nine. Morgan Hornaday had 34 assists.

Defensively, Hannah Burkhart had 17 digs, Morgan Grigsby had 15 digs, Antic added 10 digs and three aces, Hornaday had nine digs and Macy Francis had six digs and four aces.

Royals lose tight match

Eastern Hancock dropped a back-and-forth five set match Thursday, falling to Southwestern 25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 12-15.

The Royals are now 6-13 on the year and 2-4 in Mid-Eastern Conference play.
