GREENFIELD — A local nonprofit plans a day that will begin with fitness and end with fellowship.

Love in the Name of Christ of Greater Hancock County, a local nonprofit organization whose clearinghouse connects people in need to area resources, especially those offered by local churches, plans a fun run, 5K and a fair to bring together representatives from area churches.

Love INC’s second-annual Love Runs Deep 5K and Church Expo is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 22 at the Hancock County Courthouse plaza. At 9:15 a.m., a short fun run for children ages 12 and younger will begin; at 9:30 a.m., the 5K for adults and children 13 and older will begin. The route begins and ends at the Hancock County Courthouse Plaza and goes along the Pennsy Trail.

Last year’s inaugural event brought more than 100 runners to the Pennsy Trail, creating a net profit of between $3,000 and $4,000 for the nonprofit, which recently moved to its new headquarters at 630 N. State St., said executive director Karla Whisenand.

More than 100 runners have already pre-registered for the event; Whisenand said she hopes to bring in between 125 to 150 runners this year. She acknowledged it’s a busy Saturday with the Hancock Flat 50 bike ride taking place at the same time. The top male and female finishers in under-50 and 50-and-older categories will receive an award this year as well, she said.

Though some people will surely be biking around the county, at least 20 churches have signed up to be a part of the church expo, which this year will also feature live music from several of the participating churches, Whisenand said.

God’s Open Arms Ministry will grill hot dogs and hamburgers, which will be available for a donation, and the expo will also offer face painting and games for youngsters.

The expo provides an opportunity for churches to network with each other, as well as providing a chance for those without a church affiliation to shop around, Whisenand said. There’s still room for a few more churches to become a part of this year’s expo, she added.

Cost for the 5K is $25, and registration is available at loveinc-ghc.org. Those who register before Sept. 11 are guaranteed a T-shirt and drawstring bag; registration will continue until immediately before the race.
