American Legion announces student poetry competition

HANCOCK COUNTY – American Legion Post #182 is now accepting entries for its second annual poetry contest. The competition is open to students in the 3rd through 8th grades. Students are encouraged to write a poem about a military veteran or hero or an act of American patriotism that has inspired them. Poems must be no longer than 24 lines and must rhyme. Winners from two age categories will be invited to read their poems at the Legion’s Oct. 17 meeting. Monetary prizes are awarded to the first three winners in each age group. Participants should submit two copies of the poem – one with a name, address and phone number on the back, and the other blank — to Larry Huston, 5903 W. Countryside Dr., New Palestine, IN 46163, by Sept. 11.
