Greenfield-Central jumped ahead of Warren Central early Monday en route to a 4-1 win.

Kelsi McLaughlin had her second assist of the season when she found Rita Aguye-Cots for her first goal of her high school career. The Cougars struck again when Lucy Brand found McLaughlin for her first high school goal.

With 10 minutes remaining the Cougars scored their final two goals. Aguye-Cots scored her second goal of the season when McLaughlin drew a penalty kick. The last goal of the game came when Aguye-Cots hit a beautiful free kick into a running Lucy Brand who drove the ball into the back of the net with her head.

Dragons roll past Perry

The New Palestine girls soccer team opened its season Monday with an emphatic 7-0 victory against host Perry Meridian.

Edin Hurst scored twice and Victoria Crowder had a goal and two assists. Maddy Miller also factored into two goals, scoring one and assisting on another.

The Dragons jumped ahead with a four-goal burst in four minutes. Hurst started the surge by putting away a ball from a corner kick that was bouncing around in the box. One minute later, Megan Jolly found the net off of a cross from Crowder.

Crowder then put away her own with an assist from Emmy Giddens. To finish up the four-minute scoring fest, Miller smoothly one touched in the perfect cross from Crowder.

Dragons get first dual win

New Palestine posted their first dual match win of the season, beating Whiteland 180 to 184 on Monday.

Annaliese Fox was medalist with a 37. Izzy Gray shot a 44, Megan Diller a 48, Abby Belgin a 51 and Michaela Purnell had a 56.

Royals pick up first win

Eastern Hancock earned its first golf win of the fall with a 215 to 238 victory against South Decatur on Monday.

The Royals were led by medalist Jocelyn Duncan, who shot a 45. Daly Pelger shot a 55, Shelby Jackson a 56 and Bella Parker a 59.

Cougars top Beech Grove

Greenfield-Central came out strong Monday night against Beech Grove, picking up the win, 188 to 236.

The Cougars were led by Caroline Gibson’s 42. Haley Hoagland had a season best 45 and Tandess O’Neal added a 47. Rose Gerard finished out the scoring with a 52. Freshman Katie Curry also shot her personal best 54.

Tennis

Marauders get victory

In the first match of the season at Mt. Vernon’s home courts, the Marauders came out dominant and finished off a solid Shenandoah team 4-1 on Monday.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Peyton Meadors and Braeden Browning won 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, senior Sam Frye and junior Jackson Dunlavy picked up a clean 6-0,6-0 win.

Mt. Vernon also got wins from No. 2 singles player Reece Powell, who won 6-2, 7-6(2), and No. 3 singles player Sam McCarty, a 6-1, 6-1 winner.

Volleyball

Dragons sweep in 3

New Palestine won its home opener in three sets Monday, beating Connersville 25-17, 25-21, 25-12.

Kaelyn Armstrong had 13 digs and eight kills to help lead a balanced attack. Lydia Jones had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Jesi Hall added nine kills and Rylie Sturgeon tied for the team lead defensively with 13 digs.

Marauders beat Cathedral

Mt. Vernon and Cathedral battled back and forth for five sets Monday, with the Marauders pulling off the comeback win 18-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-12.

Freshman Cecilia Bulmahn led the Marauders with 24 kills, with sophomore Claire Ertel adding 16. Six Marauders had double-digit digs, including Ertel with 26, Sophie Schultz with 22, Lillie Perdue and Cecilia Bulmahn with 17, and Victoria Bulmahn and Olivia Yeley with 10 each.

Victoria Bulmahn also had 47 assists for the Marauders.

Royals get sweep

Eastern Hancock hosted North Decatur on Monday, picking up a three-set sweep for their first victory of the season.

The Royals won their opener 25-13, 25-19, 25-21.

Cougars cruise to win

Greenfield-Central returned to action against Warren Central on Monday with a three set sweep, 25-12, 25-12, 25-8. The Cougars tallied a total of 19 aces in the win.

The Cougars were led by Ava Antic’s 14 kills. Makayla Price added nine kills, Molly Broome had 34 assists and eight digs, Morgan Grigsby added eight digs and Hannah Burkhart added seven digs.

Haleigh Pribble had three blocks for the Cougars. Mary Francis had seven aces and Morgan Hornaday added there aces.

Cross-Country

County schools compete

Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon and Eastern Hancock competed in Monday’s Triton Central Early Bird meet, with Mt. Vernon having the highest finish among area teams in both the boys and girls sides.

On the boys side, Mt. Vernon finished third and Eastern Hancock finished fifth. Eastern Hancock’s Skyler Shrope was the highest county finisher, earning a ninth-place result with a time of 17:58.58. Mt. Vernon’s top finisher was Ryan Strantz in 13th, with a time of 18:26.06.

For the girls, Mt. Vernon finished fourth and Greenfield-Central finished seventh. Greenfield-Central’s Audrey Brinkruff finished third, with a time of 19:56.25, knocking two minutes off her time from last year and becoming the second athlete in school history to break the 20-minute mark. Mt. Vernon’s top finisher was Lydia Carrell in 19th, with a time of 23:57.17.
