Reader questions the definition of asylum

To the editor:

A congressional committee just voted to expand the definition of asylum to include refuge from crime or gang violence. Some guy named Yoder was behind this. This is ludicrous. For starters, crime exists in all countries. Ergo, no country can provide asylum from crime. Furthermore, the homicide rate in Yucatan state in Mexico is roughly the same as the homicide rate in Australia in the 1970s. Any honest attempt to escape crime in Guatemala would have Yucatan as the final destination.
