GREENFIELD — A group of Greenfield mothers, who rallied a county school district to put metal detectors in its buildings, has partnered with a local gun store to host a free firearm safety class for kids and their parents.

Highsmith Guns will host a firearm safety lesson for kids at 4 p.m. Aug. 4 at Heartland Resort, 1613 W. County Road 300N, in Greenfield.

The class is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

The class will focus on the dos and don’ts of handling a firearm, organizers said, including what to do if one finds an unsecured gun.

Three Greenfield mothers who spoke in front of the Greenfield-Central Schools Board of Education recently to ask that full-body metal detectors be installed at each of the district’s buildings to increase security are partnering with the owners of Highsmith Guns to host the lessons.
