HANCOCK COUNTY — Several area youths earned accolades during a competition dedicated to the shorthorn cow.

Junior Shorthorn enthusiasts gathering from 27 states and Australia competed in the 2018 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, June 25 — July 1. Not only did the juniors compete with their animals, but had the opportunity to compete in thirteen individual, team, or state contests.

Local winners were: Kendall Leonhard, Carter Wickard, Ryan Wickard, Paige Wickard and Shelby Stephenson.

Convincing prospective buyers (the judges) to purchase their animal is a glimpse of what the Team Salesmanship Contest looks like. Teams consisting of two individuals competed from 27 states and Australia, in four age divisions. In the senior division, the exhibitors were given a scenario. The Intermediate division could choose any Zoetis product to sell to a panel of judges. Prospector I and II divisions had the objective to sell an animal they had brought to the show. Judging was based on speaking participation of both team members, poise/skill in the presentation, teamwork, appearance of the animal and overall impact of the sell.

“This event is more than just a cattle show, it prepares these youth for future life experiences with the contests and added activities,” said Montie Soules, the Executive Secretary of the American Shorthorn Association. “The National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference brings together more Shorthorn producers and exhibitors than any other event we have.”
