GREENFIELD — A group of Greenfield mothers, who rallied a county school district to put metal detectors in its buildings as a way to increase security, has partnered with a local gun store to host a free firearm safety class for kids and their parents.

Highsmith Guns, 123 N. State St., Greenfield, will hold a firearm safety lesson for kids at 4 p.m. Aug. 4.

The class is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

The classes focus on the dos and don’ts of handling a firearm, organizers said, including what to do if one finds an unsecured gun.

Ashlee Burke, Lauren Andrews and Rachel Crosby — the three Greenfield mothers who spoke last month in front of the Greenfield-Central Schools Board of Education, asking that full-body metal detectors be installed at each of the district’s buildings — are partnering with the owners of Highsmith to host the lessons.

The women began rallying support for extra security in local schools after a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School left one student and one teacher injured.

The incident was the latest in a slew of tragic school shootings that has caused them concern, they say — and this time the danger was too close to home.

Putting metal detectors in schools — and, now, partnering with local experts to teach firearm safety — seemed like the best way to make their kids feel more secure during the school day, they say.
