Baseball

Royals pull away for home win

Eastern Hancock took an early lead and pulled away, outlasting Seton Catholic 7-2 in a home nonconference win.

The Royals has 11 hits in the game, led by Addison True’s 3 for 3 day at the plate. Easton Fields had two hits, including a double, and Andrew Knoblock also added two hits. A.J. Muegge and Addison True each had two RBIs for Eastern Hancock.

Joey Starrett got the win on the mound, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four in six innings. Spencer Maxwell closed the game out, allowing no hits.

Marauders drop doubleheader

Mt. Vernon lost both games of a doubleheader Friday against Yorktown, losing 10-4 and 5-3. 

The losses end the Marauders regular season at 13-11. They open sectional play Wednesday at home against Greenfield-Central.

Cougars lose 2 to Shelbyville

Greenfield-Central lost both games of their last doubleheader of the season, losing 5-3 and 10-1 to Shelbyville.

The Cougars were led offensively in the first game by Mason Bussel, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Bradley McDowell went 5 2/3 inning on the mound, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out five and walked two.

In the second game, the Cougars were led by Adam Hutchison’s 4 for 4 day at the plate. Hutchison had a double and the team’s lone RBI. On the mound, the Cougars used five pitchers in the lopsided defeat.

Dragons drop regular-season finale

New Palestine dropped a 9-3 decision to New Castle in the regular season finale Saturday. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to weather. Because both teams had clinched their positions in the conference standings, it will not be made up.

Colby Jenkins and Cameron Pitzer led the Dragons’ seven-hit attack. Jenkins was 2 for 3 with a triple and a run. Pitzer was 2 for 3. 

Cameron Espich took the loss in relief, allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings. He was the second of four Dragon pitchers. Jack Walker started and allowed one earned run over three innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.

The Dragons open sectional play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren Central against the Lawrence Central Bears.

Softball

Dragons get run-rule win against Delta

New Palestine completed a second-straight perfect Hoosier Heritage Conference  season Friday, beating Delta 13-0 in five innings.

The 3A No. 1 Dragons finish the regular season 24-1 and 7-0 in the HHC. New Palestine has won five straight HHC titles and 18 consecutive conference games.

Rieley Widmann and TeTe Hart hit homers for the Dragons. Widmann drove in four runs. Hart, Emily O’Connor, Tatum Biddle and Ashley Prange all had two hits each.

Mackenzie Jones got the pitching win, allowing four hits and striking out two over 4 2/3 innings. Kaylea Bullock got the final out with a strikeout.

The Dragons open sectional play Tuesday at home against Connersville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Marauders score 40 runs in 2 games

Mt. Vernon’s offense ended the regular season in style, leading the team to two wins in the Mt. Vernon Tournament. The Marauders bested Centerville 10-0, and then took down Rising Sun 30-3.

In the opener, the Marauders got two hits each from Sydney Perry and Haley Kissee. Each hit a home run. Perry led the way with three RBIs, and Sammi Bennett added two RBIs.

Kaitlyn Nugent pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits.

In the win against Rising Sun, the Marauders offense had 18 hits and walked 11 times to score 30 runs. Eleven different batters got hits for Mt. Vernon, with Anelise Worden and Bennett each getting three hits. Chloee Yocum homered and drove in four runs, and Worden, Macy Griner and Cassidy Parker each added three RBIs. Griner and Kissee also homered for Mt. Vernon.

Karlee Franklin got the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs and four hits in three innings.  

Golf

Mt. Vernon finishes 11th in 20-team field

Mt. Vernon finished 11th of 20 teams Saturday at the Muncie Central Invitational with a 331. 

Mt. Vernon was led by freshman Sam McWilliams with a +7 round of 79. John Husar carded an 82, Max Heitman 83, Haiden Rose 87 and Blake Johnson 96.

Westfield won the invitational with a score of 291.
