Marauders pull away from Spartans

Mt. Vernon faced Connersville in a home non-conference game Wednesday, pulling way for a 9-4 victory.

The Marauders took a 4-1 lead in the second inning but the Spartans tied the game in the top of the third. That would be the last runs Connersville scored, as Mt. Vernon plated one in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

Mt. Vernon had 15 hits, including three from Nolan Bowser and two each from Matthew Boyle, Thomas Obergfell, Payton Bovard and Jake Stank. Boyle, Obergfell, Bowser and Bovard each had two RBIs.

Mason Montgomery started the game on the mound for Mt. Vernon, and gave way to three relief pitchers. After Montgomery allowed four runs, Cole Cain, Caleb Rush and Bovard combined to hold the Spartans hitless the rest of the way.

Greenfield-Central holds on for victory

Greenfield-Central held an early 4-0 lead until the sixth inning, when visiting Franklin Central’s offense finally got on the board. The Flashes scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh inning, and the Cougars held on for the 4-3 win Wednesday.

The Cougars were held to four hits, as Braxton Turner, Blake Wilson, Adam Hutchison and Seth Robertson each singled. Noah Ramsey had two RBIs for the Cougars.

Robertson pitched a complete game on the mound, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out four.

No. 4 New Palestine loses to No. 8 Roncalli

New Palestine built an early five-run lead, but a late rally lifted No. 8 Roncalli to a 13-8 victory against the fourth-ranked Dragons on Wednesday.

The Dragons led 6-1 after four innings, but the Rebels responded with a six-run fifth to take the lead, and then broke the game open with a five-run seventh.

Jack Walker and Cameron Pitzer led New Palestine’s 14-hit attack. Walker was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Pitzer was 3 for 3 with a double, a run and two RBIs. Nick Rusche was 2 for 4 with two runs, a double and an RBI. Colby Jenkins was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Bain was 2 for 4 with two runs. Luke Greene also had two hits and scored a run.

Jacob Garrison started on the mound and struck out six while allowing five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Pitzer allowed two runs and four hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Cameron Espich threw the seventh.

Softball

Dragons jump ahead early in shutout win

New Palestine jumped ahead early Wednesday and rolled to a 12-0 victory against Indian Creek.

Kaylea Bullock and Sydney Anderson combined for a five-hit shutout. Bullock scattered four hits and struck out three in four innings.

The Dragons scored four runs in the first and five in the second to take a quick lead. Tatum Biddle supplied the offensive fireworks, going 3 for 4 with three runs, two RBI and a home run.

Eight different players had hits for the Dragons, who outhit the Braves 11-5. Jaylin Calvert was 2 for 4 with a double and a run. TeTe Hart had a double and two RBIs. Emma Tucher had a double, a run and an RBI. Macy Miller was 1 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs. Kendal Calvert singled and scored. Emily O’Connor singled and scored two runs. Michaela Jones also had a hit.

Cougars cruise past Frankton on road

Greenfield-Central put up a seven-run second inning Wednesday, adding three runs from there and cruising to a 10-2 road victory at Frankton.

The Cougars offense had 11 hits, including two each from Caroline Gibson, Sydney Williams and Maria Kihega. Williams had a triple and four RBIs and Kihega a double and an RBI.

Madge Weidner got the win with four scoreless innings on the mound. Lexi Rankin pitched three innings in relief.
