Royals fall in pitchers’ duel

Eastern Hancock traveled to Hagerstown on Thursday and couldn’t pick up the timely hits needed, falling 2-0 in a nonconference game.

The Royals outhit the Tigers seven to five, with Easton Fields and Payton Wilkinson each picking up two.

A.J. Muegge was strong on the mound, going six innings and striking out eight and walking one in the loss.

Cougars drop game to Rossville

Greenfield-Central dropped a nonconference game Thursday to Rossville, falling 2-0.

The Cougars were outhit six to four in the low-scoring game.

Softball

Cougars offense blasts Bears

Greenfield-Central cruised to a five-inning win Thursday, scoring 18 runs in the first two frames en route to a 18-5 win against Lawrence Central.

The Cougars had 13 hits in the game, with Lexi Rankin, Emily Francis, Sydney Williams and Maria Kihega each picking up a pair. Williams and Kihega each had a home run. Rankin and Kihega had four RBIs each, while Williams and Franics added three.

Williams pitched a complete game on the mound, striking out six and walking one in the win.

Royals get past Anderson

Eastern Hancock scored five first-inning runs Thursday against Anderson, then held on for a 5-2 victory at home.

The Royals were led by two RBIs from Rachel Jessup. Despite being outhit 10-5, the team maintained their early lead, with Jessi Potts picking up the win on the mound.

Tennis

Marauders drop tough match

Mt. Vernon lost to No. 8 Hamilton Southeastern on the road Thursday, 4-1.

The Marauders picked up their point at No. 3 singles, with Kaleigh Helm winning 7-5, 6-1. Mt. Vernon’s No. 1 doubles team fought back from an early deficit but fell 3-6, 6-3, 2-6.

Mt. Vernon is now 14-3 on the season and finish the regular season Monday at Anderson.

“This was great competition to get us ready for sectional week coming up,” Mt. Vernon coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “Hamilton Southeastern has very talented players and we see the level we want to get in terms of tennis. I was very proud of the way our girls carried themselves on the court and our character.”

Cougars best Blue River Valley

Greenfield-Central picked up a win Thursday on senior night, beating Blue River Valley 4-1.

Winners for the Cougars were No. 1 singles Lindsey McCord, No. 2 singles Avery Spencer, No. 2 doubles Erin Wright and Aly Proper, and in a third set comeback No. 3 singles Grace Hall.

Dragons edge past Richmond

New Palestine defeated the visiting Richmond Red Devils 3-2 on Thursday.

No. 1 singles player Megan Long, continued her improved form to win 6-4, 6-2 and secure the win for New Palestine.

The Dragons’ first two points came from the doubles teams. No. 1 doubles combination of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry won 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). The Dragons’ No. 2 doubles pairing of Sheridan Schrowe and Ashley Truman won 6-4, 6-2.
