Track

Cougars teams finish 2nd in invite

Greenfield-Central’s boys and girls track teams each earned second-place finishes in Friday’s Cougar Chase Invitational, with Franklin Community winning both boys and girls meets.

For the boys, Braden Brown set a new meet record in the long jump and was named athlete of the meet. Brown won the long jump and Adam Lee won the pole vault for the Cougars.

Earning second-place finishes were Brown in the 100 meter and high jump, and Grant DeKeyser in the 300 hurdles. Finishing third were Jacob Vance in the 200 meter, the 4×100 relay of Vance, Wyatt Looper, Adam Lee and  Brown, the 4×200 relay of Vance, Brock Wheeler, Malaki Briles and Hunter Lowe, Cordy Hargett in the pole vault and Turk Faitele in the shot put.

On the girls’ side, Crystal Peterson led the way, winning the 300 hurdles, breaking the meet record and running one of the top times in the state. She also placed second in long jump and third in the 100 hurdles. 

All three relay teams posted season best times.

Other places include Hannah Burkhart, second in the discus, Audrey Brinkruff with a second in the 3,200-meter run, Addie Coil with a second in the shot put, Olivia Fortner with a third in the pole vault and Lindsey Pope with a third in the 300 hurdles.

Tennis

Dragons top Shelbyville

New Palestine beat the Shelbyville Golden Bears 4-1 in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match Friday at Shelbyville.

The visiting Dragons found themselves down 5-2 in three matches — No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles — but came back to win all three.

At No. 1 singles, sophomore Megan Long played well in a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Senior Ivey Simmons, playing No 2 singles for the Dragons, recovered from 5-2 down in the first set to pick up a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win.

The Dragons’ No. 1 doubles pairing of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry won 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-7, and at No. 2 doubles, junior Sheridan Schrowe and sophomore Ashley Truman won 7-5, 6-4.

Marauders earn doubleheader split

Mt. Vernon traveled to New Castle on Saturday, earning a split in a doubleheader with a 4-1 loss in Game 1 and an 18-9 win in Game 2.

The Marauders were held to five hits in the loss, picking up a sixth-inning run on a Sam McCarty base hit. Game 2 was a different story, as Mt. Vernon plated 11 runs in the third inning and racked up 18 hits en route to the win.

McCarty was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Dino Tharp went 3 for 5 with a triple and five RBIs. Thomas Obergfell and Jaden Cappelletti each had three hits and two RBIs, and Payton Bovard and Jake Stank each had two hits and two RBIs.

Royals split after walk-off grand slam

After rolling to a 21-6 win in Game 1 on Saturday, Eastern Hancock lost to a walk-off grand slam in a 6-2 defeat to Daleville in Game 2.

The Royals had 18 hits in the opener, including four from Andrew Knoblock and three each from A.J. Muegge and Jarrett Lewis. Knoblock homered and drove in five RBIs. Muegge doubled and also drove in five runs. Ryan Burris had four RBIs, and Addison True had three.

Knoblock got the win on the mound, striking out nine in five innings.

In the second game, Knoblock was the sole Royals batter to record multiple hits, with two, and he also drove in the team’s only runs with two RBIs.

True took the loss on the mound, pitching the seventh inning and giving up the grand slam on a 3-2 count.

Dragons sweep past Delta

New Palestine extended its lead in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with Saturday’s doubleheader sweep at Delta.

The Dragons scored five seventh-inning runs to rally and win the opener 8-5, then claimed the second game 12-0.

The victories moved New Palestine to 18-1 overall and 10-0 in the HHC. 

In the opener, the Dragons trailed 5-2 going into the sixth inning. NP scored twice in the first, but Delta tied the game in the third and added three more in the fifth. The Dragons chipped away with a single run in the sixth before exploding in the final inning.

New Palestine had 15 hits, with junior Luke Greene going 4 for 4 with two RBIs. Jacob Garrison, Jack Walker and Colby Jenkins had two hits each. Jacob Bain, Cameron Espich and Cameron Pitzer had a single and an RBI each. Myles Kost and Nick Rusche both doubled.

Garrison allowed three earned runs and seven hits in the complete-game victory. He struck out nine.

In the second game, Jenkins’ first-inning homer got the Dragons started en route to the shutout victory. New Palestine scored in each of its at-bats — three in the first, followed by one, five and three runs in the following innings — to win a five-inning contest.

Walker pitched a one-hit shutout, walking five.

Jenkins was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs, helping lead a 13-hit attack in which 11 different Dragons had a hit. Greene was 2 for 2 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Walker had a double and two RBIs. Ian Tolle added an RBI double. 

Softball

Nugent’s 3 homers pace Marauders

Mt. Vernon improved to 13-4 on the season with a 19-7 win against Hamilton Heights on Saturday.

After a slow start the Marauders managed to compile 21 hits on the day. Kaitlyn Nugent was 3 for 5 on the day with 3 home runs, one a grand slam, and totaled 8 RBIs on the day. Nugent also pitched a complete game picking up the win.

Cassidy Parker was 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. 

Tennis

Marauders get hard-fought win

Mt. Vernon was on the road Saturday at a previous 10-=1 Missisenewa, and the Marauders came away with a hard fought 3-2 win.

Winners for Mt. Vernon were Alaina Nelson at No. 1 singles, 6-4,6-1, No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Spicer and Sophie Williams, 6-0,6-0, and the No. 2 doubles team of Alexis Lane and Maeve Laughlin, who won 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the win.

Golf

Marauders 2nd, Dragons 3rd in invite

Mt. Vernon and New Palestine finished second and third, respectively, behind Madison Consolidated in Saturday’s Batesville Invitational.

The Marauders scored a 341. John Husar led Mt. Vernon scoring with a round of 81 to place in a tie for third at the difficult Hillcrest Golf & Country Club. Xavier Dunham shot an 83, Sam McWilliams an 88, Max Heitman an 89 and Elijah Dunham a 93.

The Dragons shot a 347. Josh Shinkle led New Palestine with an 81, tied for third overall in the tournament. Elijah Domogala shot 82, Quinn Dobbins an 89 and Austin Terry a 95.
