GREENFIELD — Local police have received reports of a telephone scam in which a caller claims money is owed to the Internal Revenue Service, officials said.

The IRS does not make phone calls to attempt to collect past due taxes nor will its representatives ask for personal information over the phone, police said.

If you receive a call, hang up. If the calls continue, do not answer the phone.

Personal or financial information should never be given out over the phone to unknown callers. Do not wire money or send gift cards as payment, officials said.

Representatives from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and Greenfield Police Department say they’ve received several complaints from residents. They are advising victims to contact the Indiana Attorney General’s Office at 317-232-6201 or visit at www.in.gov/attorneygeneral to file a complaint.
