Softball

Royals roll to big win

Eastern Hancock scored in every inning Friday night against Randolph Southern, rolling to an 11-2 conference victory.

Faithe Webster led the way on offense, going 3 for 4 with a triple. Bree Ashby and Micah Black each had triples of their own. Black and Bailey Stephens had two hits and two RBIs each.

Elise Bittinger pitched a complete game for the Royals, striking out 11 in seven innings and allowing just three hits.

Dragons finish 8th in 28-team invite

The New Palestine track teams finished eighth Friday at the 28-team Zionsville Invitational.

The Dragon girls tallied 44 points and were just 14 points back of fourth place. The New Palestine boys tallied 29.5 points and were 8.5 back of sixth.

The boys had eight top-10 finishes in the meet, including two in the high jump. Laine Schonauer and Gavin Hausz were fourth and fifth, respectively, by clearing 6-0. Schonauer took fourth on the tiebreaker.

Kyler Harrison had a top-five with a fifth-place finish in the 3200 (9:50.21). Drew Austin was eighth in the 1600 (4:34.64) and Spencer Worth ninth on the pole vault (12-0). The 4×800 relay was seventh, while the 4×100 and 4×400 both placed eighth.

The girls had 11 top-10 finishes, including two each in the 100 and 400.

Addy Halter had a pair of top 10s. She was eighth in the 100 (13.55), with TeTe Hart ninth (13.6). Halter was also ninth in the 200 (28.68). In the 400, Sophia Taylor was fourth (1:01.16) and Victoria Crowder 10th (1:02.35).

New Palestine had two other individual fifth-place finishes, coming from Kaylin Casner in the 1600 (5:24.73) and Aden Lumbley in the shot put (34-5). Morgan Willard placed seventh in the high jump (4-10).

All three relays finished in the top five. The Dragons’ 4×800 was second, 4×400 third and 4×100 fifth.

Tennis

Royals drop close match

Eastern Hancock hosted Northeastern on Friday, falling in a close match, 3-2.

Winners for the Royals were Cassandra Hannammann at No. 2 singl3s, 6-4, 6-0, and Valentina Brooks at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. 

Dragons get road victory

New Palestine finished the week with a 4-1 victory Friday at Lawrence Central.

Dragons sophomore Megan Long played an outstanding match at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, junior Caylie Almond used deep ground strokes to win 6-2, 6-2, giving the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

No. 1 doubles pairing of juniors Josee King and Claire Cherry kept its composure to win a third set tiebreaker, which they won 10-4. The Dragons won the match 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-4.

At No. 2 doubles for the Dragons, junior Sheridan Schrowe and sophomore Ashley Truman continued their winning form to defeat LC juniors Izzy Karandos and Brittney Bohlman 6-2, 7-6(0).

Marauders cruise at home

Mt. Vernon improved to 8-2 on the season with a dominant win against Centerville on Friday, picking up the 5-0 victory.

The closest match of the night was at No. 3 singles, where Kaleigh Helm 6-7 (9), 7-6 (6), 16-14. Every other match was a two-set win for Mt. Vernon.

Softball

Dragons run-rule Roncalli

New Palestine used a hot start and a good pitching performance from senior Mackenzie Jones on Saturday in a 10-0 six-inning victory against Roncalli.

The Dragons scored five runs in the first inning, three in the fourth and single runs in the next two innings.

Jones pitched a two-hit shutout, walking three and fanning four. It was the Dragons’ second shutout of the week — and of the season.

New Palestine’s 14-hit attack featured four extra-base hits, two from the bat of Ashley Prange. The senior doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs. Emma Tucher had a double in her 2 for 3 day and drove in two runs. Michaela Jones was 3 for 4 with a run. Mackenzie Jones was 3 for 4 with a double.

Tatum Biddle had two hits and three RBIs. Emily O’Connor had a hit and an RBI. TeTe Hart had the Dragons’ other hit.

Track

Marauders teams finish 4 in Kokomo Relays

Mt. Vernon’s boys and girls teams took part in Saturday’s Kokomo Relays, each earning a fourth-place finish.

For the boys, Conner Nelson finished second in the discus and third place in the shot put. In the 1,000-yard run, Alex Carver and Drew Bluethmann took third and fourth, respectively. Brent Donaldson took third in the 110-meter hurdles. 

The distance medley relay team of Luke Miles, Michael Damer, Rielly Glassing and Bluethmann finished second. 

The sole winner for the Marauders was the girls distance medley team of Kamryn Eason, Rylie Pearson, Arianna Mack and Hannah Watson. The 1,200 sprint medley team of Vivian Hoeppner, Emily Keeler, Mack and Eason finished second.

The girls distance medley team of Mariah Arnold, Sarah Herman, Taylor Bostic and Kassandra Ramirez finished third, as did the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle team of Mackenzie Campbell, Hoeppner, Addisyn Baer and Raelyn Stanfield.

Tennis

Marauders finish fifth at Zionsville

Mt. Vernon took part in the highly-competitive Zionsville invite on Saturday, which featured No. 6 Center Grove, No. 6 Munster, No. 16 Zionsville, No. 18 Brebeuf, and ranked district teams Crown Point, Chesterton and Portage.

At No. 2 doubles, Alexis Lane and Maeve Laughlin pulled out a stunner against Munster, beating them in the first round and finishing fourth overall. 

At No. 1 doubles, Olivis Spicer and Sophie Williams lost two close matches but closed with a dominant win against Brebeuf to finish seventh.

At No. 3 singles, Kaleigh Helm won her first match vs Chesterton and lost against Crown Point. Freshman Abby Worley played the last match, losing against Zionsville to finish fourth.

Lydia Ruegsegger lost to champion Center Grove at No. 2 singles in her first match but dominated the next two, earning 5th.

Alaina Nelson lost a tough match at No. 1 singles to second place finisher Brebeuf and won her second match before a loss to Crown Point, finishing sixth.
