Schools locked down after unidentified adult entered building

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Eastern Hancock’s three school buildings were placed on a brief lockdown Wednesday midday after an unidentified man entered the high school through a side door, alarming students.

A student spotted the man as walked through a door on the west side of the high school — ignoring the school’s policy that all visitors must enter through the main office.

The student called the front office from her cellphone and alerted administrators to the individual, officials said. The district’s three buildings, which share a single campus, were immediately placed on lockdown while school officials and Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies searched the property.

After a short investigation, the lockdown was lifted. School leaders learned the man had come to the building to drop off an item of clothing for his child. He’d left immediately afterward.
