Greenfield Main Street nominated to win $25,000

GREENFIELD – On Feb. 26, Independent We Stand, a national small business movement, kicked off its third-annual America’s Main Streets contest to benefit consumers, small business owners and Main Street organizations. The contest rewards Main Street with $25,000 in cash and sponsor-related prizes, according to a press release.

Greenfield Main Street, Inc. in Greenfield, Indiana, and Fortville Action Inc., are among this year’s nominees. This year’s theme is “Local Memories. Lasting Impact.”

Hundreds of thousands of dollars in private investment have been matched with grants in the past three years through Greenfield Main Street to help fund facade renovations, signs, and awnings for new and existing businesses. The organization has worked to create new events that bring people in to the downtown with established favorites like the North Street Fitness Festival and the newest additions of Boos and Brews and Shamrock the Block.

In Fortville, civic stakeholders created Envision Fortville, a plan offering a nod to the resonant history and traditions inherited, and specifying the future envisioned-balancing community, compatibility and sustainability. Within three years, stakeholders had created design standards and plans for Main Street and downtown Fortville.

Residents also worked to ensure a welcoming community for newcomers, including the Main Street Arts and Music Festival. Fortville Action, Inc. continues these efforts: to create inclusive and innovative growth; to maintain Fortville’s character and energy; and to connect and collaborate among residences, businesses and governmental stakeholders, according to its website.

“Our Independent We Stand America’s Main Streets contest shines a light on the pride business owners and communities take in their Main Streets,” said Bill Brunelle, co-founder of Independent We Stand. “We know small businesses on these Main Streets help them thrive and have a measurable economic impact. This contest is a chance to share those stories with people from coast-to- coast.”
