GREENFIELD — As the deadline draws closer, Hancock County voter registrations are piling up at the clerk’s office, election officials say.

Hoosiers wishing to cast a ballot on primary Election Day on May 8 must submit their forms at the voter registration office no later than 4 p.m. Monday or by midnight if they register online, said Marcia Moore, Hancock County clerk.

If a resident still needs to register, there are a number of tools provided by the secretary of state to simplify the voter registration process, Moore said. They can follow the registration link on the county’s website, download the app or register at the BMV or other government offices, she said.

Residents who have not submitted the proper paperwork should know their registration information will remain in a “pending” file for seven days after they register before the clerk’s office can process it, Moore said. Election officials then will send out an acknowledgement card to the address on file, Moore said. The voter is officially registered if the card is not returned in the mail.

A voter who waits until the last minute before the April 9 deadline will be able to vote on Election Day, but there might be a delay to vote early, Moore said. If the voter absolutely must vote early, they need to bring a proof of residency to the clerk’s office so the staff can pull their file from the pending folder for approval, she said.

The clerk’s office asks Hancock County residents to be patient to allow time for the process to work, Moore added.

Officials have issued 26 applications for absentee ballots and have sent 18 back. Additionally, the clerk’s office hopes that about 25 percent of voters will vote early, Moore said.

Early voting starts Tuesday and can be done at either the Hancock County Courthouse and the McCordsville Town Hall. The Hancock County Library branches in Greenfield and New Palestine (Sugar Creek) will open Saturday, April 28.

A detailed list of voting times and locations on and before Election Day can be found on the county’s website, hancockcoingov.org.
