GREENFIELD — The H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts, 122 W. Main St., has been selected as one of only 250 theaters worldwide to host the Manhattan Short Film Festival at 7 p.m. Friday. GREENFIELD — Greenfield Parks and Recreation offers a Family Fossil & More Hunt at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Thornwood Preserve, 1597 S. Morristown Pike. All are welcome to look for fossils, mussels, animal tracks, interesting rocks and trees. NEW PALESTINE — The Sugar Creek Township Fire Department is hosting the 10th annual Sugar Creek Township Fire and Life Safety Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Fire Station 45, 3545 S. County Road 600W. All are welcome to attend a day filled with activities, demonstrations and free family friendly fun. Among the activities are: antique fire truck rides; the chance to practice a family escape plan in the fire safety trailer; Flanner and Buchanan’s “Play it safe life awaits campaign” will give away free bike helmets to the first 100 children to attend; dispose of unwanted solid medications for free at the Indiana State Police and The Indiana Attorney General’s Bitter Pill Booth; learn about road safety from the Indiana Hoosier Helpers; learn about the new all-terrain vehicle laws and safe behaviors from the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources; check out a St. Vincent Stat Flight Helicopter, Indiana Dept. of Homeland Security training medic unit; participate in the Firefighter combat challenge. GREENFIELD — The Elks Lodge, 820 S. State St., hosts two events Saturday. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the lodge is open to the public for free hot dogs and drinks, a bike raffle and a bounce house. On location will be a DARE officer, the fire department, the blood mobile and the Boy Scouts of America. At 7 p.m., the lodge presents Rock for Research, a cancer research fundraiser featuring the Gordon Bonham Band. Events include a hog roast, a live auction and raffles.
