GREENFIELD — J.B. Stephens Elementary School will host a screening for its 2017-18 Typical Peer Program, which is a preschool program for children who are between age 4 and 5 by Aug. 1.

The screening will be conducted from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at J.B. Stephens Elementary School, 1331 N. Blue Road, Greenfield. If school is canceled, the make-up day will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, March 3. Students in the typical peer program must live in the Greenfield-Central schools district. Bus transportation will not be available.

Typical peers possess age appropriate skills and serve as good speech and social models for our children who have special needs. The children will be required to pass a speech screening. Applicants are chosen based on this screening and teacher observation. Parents will be notified on or before March 10 whether their child was selected. Should more applicants qualify than space allows, a drawing will be conducted to fill positions.

Class times for the typical peer program are 7:20 to 10:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday or 11 a.m. to 1:55 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There is one licensed teacher per class and at least one teacher’s assistant per class, with two being the norm. While classes usually start small, they typically have about 12 children in each session.

If a child is chosen to participate as a typical peer, there is a $75 registration fee due at the time of enrollment. No fees are collected on the screening day.

Tuition charges are as follows:

First installment, due Aug. 1, $253.34

Second installment, due Nov. 1, $253.33

Third installment, due Feb. 1, $253.33
