GREENFIELD — It’s been said that a negotiation is successful if both parties walk away a bit disappointed, and Friday night’s conference doubleheader between Greenfield-Central and Delta had that feeling.
After dropping the opener 7-4, Greenfield-Central rebounded by shutting down the Eagles in Game 2, winning 11-3. The night’s games bring the Cougars’ record to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.
Drey Jameson was given the choice of which game to start and he chose to start the second game of the night. Based on his performance, he seems to be onto something.
Jameson started the game in the top half of the first with a walk, stolen base, and a run to give himself the lead before getting to work on the mound. He would face the minimum in the first three innings.
At the end of Game 2, Jameson allowed only three hits, two runs and had 15 strikeouts for a complete-game victory.
Delta’s first hit of the night would come via a double by senior Mitchell Hahn, who was driven in by another double by Adam Paschal. Jameson would limit the damage by securing two strikeouts to end the threat, and he kept that momentum going by striking out the side in 1-2-3 in the fifth.
Jameson was sitting on 14 strikeouts, including seven straight at one point, and the two Delta doubles would be the only time Delta could get balls into the outfield.
And, just to cap off his night, Jameson would hit a seventh inning grand slam to push the Cougar lead to 11-2, making victory a near formality.
Greenfield scored three runs in the first inning following Jameson’s walk and steal, driven in by a double by Tyler Farrell and a triple by Landen Davis. Three more runs would follow in the fourth inning fueled by singles by Jameson and Farrell capitalizing on prior Eagle errors.
In Game 1 however, the Eagles were able to knock runners in with two outs to grab a victory, 7-4. Four of Delta’s first five runs came with two outs in the second inning, following a home run by Eagles shortstop Adisyn Coffey to open the scoring.
Tate Hall would get a run back for himself during his next his at-bat by looping a home run over the right field wall.
The Cougars would fall behind 7-1 before mounting a comeback attempt in the fifth. With three walks and two singles, Greenfield kept the bases loaded and rotating, but were only able to push across three runs.
After the fifth, the Cougars would not seriously threaten again. However, that game ending gave Jameson his chance to shine.
