GREENFIELD — Supporters of Mt. Vernon schools chowed down on sample-sized portions of food from Hancock County restaurants during the sixth annual Taste of Mt. Vernon on Thursday night.

The event, conducted at Adaggio’s Banquet hall, aimed to raise $35,000 for the district’s education foundation through sponsorships, tickets, donations and a silent auction. About 325 people attended, said foundation executive director Andrea Yovanovich.

A dozen food vendors lined the walls of the banquet hall, dishing out pasta, pizza, wings, nachos, ribs and more. In the last two years, the event has grown so much that organizers might soon need to seek a bigger venue — a blessing and a curse, Yovanovich said.

Taste of Mt. Vernon is one of the foundation’s biggest fundraisers every year, said foundation president Barry Stadler.

The foundation supports classroom projects by offering grants to teachers in the corporation. Since the foundation issued its first grants in 2008, it has provided $225,000 to teachers, Stadler said.
